Hello!
I've been out of the hobby for a few years and am eager to reconnect and get back into it.
I was pointed here from another forum and was told it'd be a good place to sink back into crippling, crippling addiction.
The only game I've played in the past couple years has been Blood Bowl, so I'm a bit rusty, but am eagerly raking through my big box o' models deciding on an army.
I was thinking about coming along on Thursday, maybe finding a game and hoping to find an opponent with some patience for a born-again noob who, with the exception of a starter game in GW last week, hasn't played in ages and has forgotten a lot.
Oh well, might see y'all on Thursday,
Stuart

Aye come along, there is usually plenty going on, even if you just want to grab a brew and spectate. There are generally about half a dozen games going on, plus various card/board games too.

Hi Stuart, You would be very welcome. The club has an open game policy so pretty much anything goes though by far the most popular scene is fantasy and sci-fi tabletop wargames. GW dominates but Warmachine/Hordes has a following too as does many other skirmish games and boardgames too. See you there.

I can only repeat would John and Paul have said so far and add that as it would be your first night, it's free.
So you really have got nothing to lose to turn up and see what's happening.
Cheers Gus

Sold off a lot of my painted stuff a while back, though I still have bits and pieces and I have a lot - a lot - of unpainted stuff. My choices are between:
Ogre Kingdoms: Got lots of core troops and some leadbelchers. Some are painted, but are horrific and will be repainted. I like the look of these guys and I could probably get an army on the table quite quickly which is the major concern.
Orcs and Goblins: My first love. Most of my painted ones are gone, but I have a fair amount of unpainted Orcs, a buttload of undercoated Night Goblins, some painted goblin chariots. I also have a lot of the war machines, maybe a pump wagon, a giant and some trolls. I like the character of the greenies, but realise they take a bit longer to get on the board.
Skaven: Got everything I would need for a good, competitive army and before I left, this was my plan. Skaven are my favourites background-wise. Of course, they would take a while to get onto the board as I'd want to carpet any table in fur.
Bretonnians: Some painted, most unpainted. Maybe a unit of knights, peasants and bowmen painted. I do have a buttload of lovely, nerfed knights sitting unbuild though. Again, a smaller army, easy to get onto the tabletop, but nerfed.
Vampire Counts: Mantic undead. Built and they will be painted, but perhaps not first in the queue. One thing holding me back here is that I'd like to play in a GW store, so they're probably not best choice for a first army.
I'm not up to speed on the new edition, so any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Just a thought or two re the armies you mention. It seems to me that the Orcs & Goblins big boost in 8th ed is their increased access to lots more special choices. You are no longer as restricted in terms of taking units from their best section of the book. Big blocks of infantry have been given a boost in 8th too so they fit the bill in that respect too.
Ogres have perhaps been given an infantry boost too as they can now deliver huge numbers of attacks from two ranks of three (19 attacks from two ranks of three inc champ). They suffered a bit in 7th and I can well imagine them being much more scary now.
I think that the Skaven book was written with 8th ed in mind and remains a strong book. I don't have any experience of fielding them or much experience of facing them.
There is lots of chat about how Vamps have taken a big hit in their very important magic phase. I think that time will tell with regard to new ways of playing to their strengths (one-die spamming of Invocation is no longer the way forward). The other big change for Vamps is that outnumbering with a fear-causing enemy no longer causes an auto-break so that element of their approach has gone.
I'd still offer the advice I'd always offer, which is to go with the army that immerses you most enjoyably into the Warhammer world. Don't worry too much about their competitiveness unless you are a pure tournament player.

Failing to choose the army that you like best, go for the Vamps, then I'll sort you out with a match up vs. my Mantic Dwarfs.
