Greetings. I've been getting a bit restless for a new game or two while I await the eventual return of my Warhammer mojo and I was wondering whether Dystopian Wars from Spartan Games could be a fun one to take a plunge into. www.spartangames.co.uk/dystopian_wars_home.htmlThe company make Uncharted Seas and Firestorm Armada, both of which get very good reviews. I am tempted by Firestorm Armada as I don't have a space combat game at all. However the new release of Dystopian Wars could be a good one too. It is classic Jules Verne steampunk, set in an alternative Victorian age and the combat takes place on land, sea and air. The models are (I think) smaller than FA and US (which I think is a good thing as the models for both those systems are really large). Anybody fancy it? Alternatively, does anyone have any systems on their gaming horizons that they are tempted by at the moment? Gus mentioned Infinity the other day...

Looks different. It's a shame the site doesn't have a pic of a battle in progress or something and like you say it's hard to judge the scale of the models.
I think if Santa is good to me, I'll be picking up a copy of the Infinity rulebook and a box of models.

It does look interesting and the models are fun and nicely detailed. Just not sure, as Gus mentioned, what size the models are and how many you will need for a reasonably sized game, as the "Mega Bundle" comes in at £125 and that is a fair chunk of money... though to be fair it does have a lot in it!
Sadly even if Santa is good to me, I don't think I will be getting in to any new games for a little while. Saying that the gamers heart is a fickle one.
Cheers

wow looks damn nice think im in the same boat as im slightly tired of GW products atm. ill defiantly pick up a set (after Christmas) just hope there will be people to play it with, really nice looking models.
well i was looking into giving yu-gi-oh a try after watching a game a few weeks back. i have also been thinking about an older RP like vampire or similar but as i work strange shift patterns so that may not be the best idea.

Although it probably a while before it release but Leviathan could be fun too: monstersinthesky.com/It looks to be a very similar premise and I think I find the idea of flying ships more appealing than land ships. I don't think I would be too interested in the terra-firma aspect of Dystopia Wars... but Zepplins with airstrips are frickin sweet! Cheers

yeh looks nice but think im sold on the dystopian wars as I like the models better than the concept art for monsters in the sky. but who knows, will see what they come up with.

So three months on what are people thinking about this game. I am certain to pick up a rule book off the internet this week, however I am instead considering (having sold some stuff on eBay) to go the whole hog and get Spartans "mega bundle" from their store. My reasoning is that, if I go out and buy one faction's battle group box set + carrier model + rules etc its going to cost me about £65, for what I am told is about a 1000pts. That means that someone else has to have a force as well or I buy a second faction bringing the total to about £110. Where as I can buy the bundle (all four factions battle group box sets + rule book and cards) for £125, giving me about 700pts for each faction. Then I can pick up the carrier models for any factions I like and a later point or in the case of the Prussian Zeppelin (just too cool) when they make more! At least this way I can play a game without having to worry about others having models etc. Though I do want the Zeppelin all the same... but I will have to wait for it to come back in to stock

Hello folks, So I folded and bought in to Dystopian Wars and picked up a starter set of each faction. I have read over the rules and got in a game with Rab and Stewart on Monday. I have to say I was very pleased, it definitely falls in to the easy to pick up but hard to master category and its great fun to boot. The rules are very user friendly (though not the rule book, its a bit convoluted) and a lot of laughs because of the exploding d6 mechanic, the strategy and challenges come from your order of activation (each player takes it in turn to activate 1 squadron) and maneuvering your models around to the best advantage. Add to that the models are really nice (much nicer than Spartans previous games, which use roughly the same rules by the way) and you have got yourself a very nice game. If anyone fancies a game just let me know and we can organise something Cheers

Yep Calum really good game, I like the game mechanics a lot . Vey easy to pick up and play. Especially liked the Battleship on Battleship duel with Stuart, amazing damage output from these beasts when they are at full strength. On the other hand when they take some damage their output drops and they become more vulnerable too. Maybe get myself a small British Empire force at Cannonade next month.

There were a couple of things I got wrong, nothing too serious as we were all playing it the same way. And after looking at the different ships strengths from each faction it is very detrimental to some factions not using the boarding rules, but now we have the fundamentals down from the first game without them it will add another dimension to future games. Next we can add air units once we are comfortable with all that and so on. There are a few new previews of some of the new ships due out later on as well all the links can be found here: forum.spartangames.co.uk/smf/index.php?board=178.0I have done a quick scheme test on a Japanese Cruiser and it has turned out how I wanted so I will get that fleet done first. I still don't know how I want to do the Britannia and Prussian fleets and I will have to done a couple of tests on the American ships to see what I like best from the 2 ideas I have for them. I should be at the club tonight if anyone is interested in a game? Cheers

I would love to, but sadly there has been a death in family so I wont be able to make it to the club. But I will let you know, nearer the time, if I can make it the following week. I know Squinty was looking for a game as well but not time after the Bloodbowl league is over.
Cheers
