I am struggling to decide what nation to go for. I am veering towards the Soviets at the moment but could anyone give me some pointers as to their pros and cons? Also, in terms of models and units is it possible to field all of the various unit types to learn the game in a balanced way?
If I do go for the Soviets (late war) could you give me a pointer or two for some starter units to go for? I still don't know quite what list I'd be using so if there are units that are pretty universal throughout their lists I can start with them.
If I go Soviet Eastern front will that match up with what what Donzo. Squinty and Gus are planning? (eg, if you are all going Mediterranean or specifically Western Front I could try and fit in with you guys more).

Hi Paul, Seems that we are all going for late war, 1944+, the best source book to look at for this period is "Fortress Europe", I'll bring it along on Thursday for you to have a look at.
From what I've experienced in the short time I've played the game is that all infantry or all tanks just doesn't work. The game has really been set up that combined arms are the way to go. From a players point of view this is a bonus as we get to see every facet of the game.
From a soviet point of view by the late war period their armies were on a par with everyone else if not superior in some aspects, use of artillery for example. To start with i would recommend a "Strelkovy Batalon" backed up with some Corps Support.
An "Udarny Strelkovy Batalon" box set gives you all the basic requirements of the force org chart. You can then add a huge amount of support to this basic infantry battalion, Heavy Machine Gun Platoons, Sub Machine Gun Platoons, Mortar Platoons, Anti Tank platoons, Artillery Platoons and even Rocket Artillery Platoons. You also have access to some of the best tanks around at that time the T34 was the soviet mainstay ably supported by KV-85 and IS-2 Heavy tanks.
You really can't go wrong with getting an "Udarny Strelkovy Batalon box" and some T-34's.
I'll be bringing along my table, scenery and armies for the next couple of weeks for use of anyone interested in the game.

cheers guys. just in case anybody was buying Fortress Europe the consensus seems to be that it will be outdated by the new Forces book which will be part of the 3rd ed book.
Any tips on which Soviet book I should go for? is there a general LW Soviet book or are they for very specific theatres?

Choose 6th Airborne myself in the end based from Turning the Tide. Just ordered some stuff from Maelstrom and it amounts to about 1800 points. Going to add some tanks for some divisional support and so by the time I do that I should be able up to about 2000. Now we just need to focus on terrain

I've gone for the Soviets. At teh moment all I've ordered is an Udarny Strelkovy Batalon plus decals, paints and the Red Bear sourcebook. There are lots of versions of the T-34 so I'll need to look at some lists before I start adding any armour and other fun things.

There's a fair few of us playing FoW through in Dunfermline now. I say playing, I've not played yet but my 51st Highland Division is sitting at around 2500-3000pts I've really enjoyed painting them as a bit of a change. Not too much left to paint probably a week or so if I really got my finger out. Have you checked out The plastic soldier company to get lots of tanks or infantry at a reasonable price especially for a Russian horde? theplasticsoldiercompany.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1Not sure if you'd need to source bases or not mind you

Hi Brian. Cheers for the link, that looks like a winner for some of the vehicles.
I need to read up on some history and choose a specific Soviet theatre to explore and try to theme things around that.

If anyone one from the Stirling club would like to come along to Falkirk on a Monday night for a game of FOW they would be most welcome. We have about 10 to 12 player and you can turn up without a army and get a game.We use a 8x6 or 12x6 table to play on.It stops getting hammered by artillery.

Cheers David
Yeah, the club is looking at providing terrain for a 8'x6' table at a minimum while we learn the game.
It does make any game a little more tactical if artillery can be out of range depending on you and your opponents deployments.
