I was thinking of buying up a sci-fi series on DVD and having never seen either the new version of Battlestar Galactica or Babylon 5 I was wondering which one you'd all reccomend? I'd be starting from series one episode one and working my way through them so could anyone who's seen both let me know if they are any good? I fancy a good old fashioned space dog-fight...

Paul, I can confirm that having seen a lot of Babylon 5 and every episode of BSG that BSG blows it out the f**king water.
It's well written, the CGI is movie-like in it's special effects and the show actually keeps you hooked like you wouldn't believe. Season 4 has just started on Sky One and the opening show was a better than I thought possible.
BSG all the way m8. In terms of a Sci-Fi TV show, it's the best I've ever seen and I've been hooked since it was first on back in 2003.
...and even if it wasn't better written, better effects and overal better, you get Grace Park (aka Boomer) and Katie Sackhoff (aka Starbuck) to oogle at.
Finally, if I could use just one word to some up the action scences in BSG it would be...gritty.
I can't praise it enough actually and it will be my mission in life to get Neil McKay to watch it (he'd tell you it's crap cause Starbuck in now a chick).

Don't listen to them Paul Babylon 5 is a god like program with better characters & plot lines that will blow you away, unlike Battlestar which is really just a remake of a cult classic with fancy effects put in it to make it look cool. So if I was to watch Battlestar I think I would still watch the Dirk Benedict version any day of the week. Think of your classic image of a Cylon in your head in those cool space fighters of theres, Its not in the new program . Some other classic episodes like landing on a planet full of scantily clad women who kidnap you won't see that either or the planet they land on that is a medieval planet with Knights & castles guess what you won't see that either. Or the spin offs where they are orbiting earth & affecting its past against the Germans in WWII, plus some others. Key programming that new BSG just cannot do as it is squeaky clean slick Sci Fi viewing. Go BABYLON 5 the whole program is amazing with a few good movie extras too. Now lets see they new BSG fan boys rage about that.... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D.

Babylon 5 is good, no doubt about it, but as a Sci-Fi drama series, BSG does beat it, in my opinion. The truth of the matter is they are both good and if you enjoy one, you'll probably enjoy them both, if of course you can let go of the past Failing that, if you don't like either of the them, I'll loan you The West Wing - and then you'll want to know where the last 6 weeks of your life went. Best show on TV....ever.

Only kidding about BSG, would not like to comment on it really as I have only seen the first extended film length episode.
But I have watched all Bab 5 & thought it was amazing.

I might get abused for saying this but I've never heard of Babylon 5 and have never seen a single episode of Battlestar Galactica. I've never heard anything great being said about them.
Thus, I can't recommend them. However, I do recommend CSI.

you just broke Stirling Wargamer forum rule number 7!!!Series 1 is going legitly on play.com for about £18, and the pilot about a fiver, well worth it! Series 2 is about £20 and 3 is still expensive as it was just released. Anyone catch BSG last night? Series 4 ep 2... I don't have Sky, so am relying on the must unreliable friend to record it for me, guess what he forgot to do?

Well Mr McKay. Well well well... Trying to convince me to break the law if you please.
Unless he meant some type of Direct2Drive website.
But I'm not into buying series on DVD. Although I've not seen any of the new NCIS episodes yet, I'll wait on them coming on the TV. I see no point in spending money on a series like that when you find out who the killer/main baddie is the first time round and thus have no need to watch it again.
Or is BSG not like that?

I believe you can download BSG legitimately from NBC Universal in the USA, not unlike 4oD or BBCi.
