Last weekend DWARF over at Dunfermline hosted their annual WFB tournament Cry Havoc. There were a few of us from SW along so I thought I’d write some brief battle reports for this years Cry Havoc while it was fresh in my mind.
Game one was a random draw and I drew Alex Eason and his Vampire Counts. I’ve known Alex on and off for a while so it was good to get a chance to actually get a game in with him. Game one was a 1000pt capture scenario. Alex had a pretty small looking army, with a unit of 30 Grave Guard flanked by Ghoul units. I sent off a Unit of Knights Panther into one of the Ghoul units and managed to destroy them, and managed to deal with the other Ghouls and newly raised Zombies fairly easily. Shifting 30 Grave Guard is another matter though and all I could do as we entered turn six was to hope that my army stayed put around the objective. I had the numbers to claim the objective, but not without being close enough to be charged by the GG. My Swordsmen broke and relinquished their hold on the objective. Final result was 348pts v 725pts = solid loss.
A loss in game one put me on table 12 for game two which was a Pitched Battle against Richard Cunningham and his High Elves. This was a pretty cool game that was fairly finely balanced for most of the game. I had a chance of taking out his BSB with a nice cannon shot after he failed his “look out sir” roll, but rolled a one to wound! The same Cannon crew rolled a one to wound after hitting his Dragon Mage later on… Richard's Dragon Mage actually started the game sending my Outriders panicking off the board and causing my Inner Circle Knights to leg it down the table in terror. As it happened, the Knights Panther redeemed themselves when they rallied and took on the Dragon, killing the mage and running down the beast. My Steam Tank functioned pretty well, rolling up plenty of impact hits against his Spearmen and against his White Lion Chariots. My Helblaster had it’s second good game in a row, blasting away without any misfires. In the end claiming three table quarters, three banners, the general and the BSB was enough to give me a decent massacre of 2688pts v 668pts.
A win was enough to put me on table seven for the last game which was to be a Flank Attack and I was up against Tam Whyte and his Empire. Tam chose to be the flanking force and kept back a unit of Sword and Flagellants for this purpose. As the defender I tried to keep the battle near the centre of the table and concentrated on taking out as much of this reduced army as I could as fast as I could. Both his flanking units were on foot so I reckoned I would have some time to do so if I could keep fairly central. Both of us threw our Steam Tanks and War Altars down the centre and I managed to get a charge off on his Tank with my Flagellants and Knights Panther. This was enough to tie up his tank and I managed to kill it over the course of three turns. I bogged down his War Altar with ranks of Swordsmen and although I won three combats against it I just couldn’t take the last wound off his Arch Lector so it stayed put. My Helblaster finally misfired and blew itself to smithereens after having a great tournament. In the end I managed a solid victory with 2089pts v 1050pts.
This was enough for 9th place overall which is much better than I usually manage and I had three really good games against good blokes who all played the game in a fast and friendly manner. This is just what we need at a tournament so cheers to Alec, Richard and Tam for that.
Well done and cheers to Brian and all the guys at DWARF for putting on a good day for us all.
Results are below - another strong tournament for Neil - surely only a matter of time before he nails a win. Also well done to Donald who took Best Army with his very cool Dragon Ogres OK army.
EDIT - opps - This should probably be in the Battle Reports section. My mod powers are weak, so could someone move it when you get a chance? Cheers.
