Hi guys, i've been thinking about taking up Warhammer 40k for the last 15 years, but never have. The reason for this is mainly due to my mates not being interested in it and the wife wouldn't consider it for a second.
The painting side of it puts me off a bit too as i know any army i paint will look like crap, as i'm not very artistic. I'm willing to give it a go though and would just like some advice on how to start.
I have no clue about the gameplay and rules and would like some advice on what army to go for. I like the look of the Space Marines, but surely everyone goes them? Also should i buy the boxed set "Assault on Black Reach" or just buy the rulebook and codex for the army i choose to go?
Thanks a lot for reading guys. Your club sounds great, i'd love to be a part of it.

Hi & welcome to the fourms.
With the painting, I would not worry. It all about building up the experince & learing from them & the same gose with the game.
As for what to start with. I would highly recommend getting the Black Reach box if your going to start getting into the hobby.
Why
Well first all you have two core armies being the Orks & Space Marine (which you said, you like the Marines) as in you have your commander & your two troop chose (usely the first thing to be filled in to make a army legal in games) & then some specil stuff like...for marine, you got the Dreadnought (big walker) who is part of your Elites chose as well as the Terminators.
Also it £50 which is a great deal for someone who is starting in the hobby. For that in the box, it basicly cover your Terminators (trooper with the big fist) which are £25 & also the Dreadnought which is a further £25 which is £50 right there. So in grand total, for a mere £50 for the Black Reach box game, you are getting roughly £150 worth of stuff for £50. But then you will be adding on to your chosen army with unit to fill in any weakness or area's you army may suffer or because you think the unit just look cool.
Black reach also come with all the basic as well with the rule book, temp, dice. Though I would also still get the BIG rule book as well, just the mini one dose miss out all the background & some cool armies, but the mini rule book that you get with Black Reach is easy to carry. Big rule book just had a little more with the model & painting side as well as a bit more background into the Warhammer 40k world.
I'd also highly recommend that you pop down to Games Workshop Falkirk & talk to the manger Donzo or any of the staff there who can give a lot of great advice both buying into your first army/about Black Reach & painting tips. The staff be more than happy to go through anything you may have problem (like a rule you are not sure off/still trying to get use to) or a painting skill you wish to pick up like say highlight for exsample as well as some fast & effect way of getting great result with the GW wash paints.
You can easily get a intro game which will take 15-20 min & a painting lession which sould take roughly 30 mins??.
Like wise come to the club to get new oppents, help learn/get into the game. Also to watch & see really.
Hope that helps out

Well i went out and bought 'Assault on Black Reach', a hobby starter paint set and some black spray paint. I also had a game against the guy from the GW shop and enjoyed it thoroughly. I can see it taking me about 3months to paint them, lol. I take it nobody turns up with half painted armies?

I take it nobody turns up with half painted armies? I would not worry about fully painted armies. You just take the models that you built, even if there still in plastic fourm/not painted as some time real life dose get in the way of our hobby.

Nobody would mind half painted armies that Ive ever met - though most if not all would like to see progress being made instead of an all black or silver army week after week. The guys at GW Falkirk will also sit you down and show you how to paint quickly to a high standard (easily) - worth going and talking to them. (best bit - painting lessons are free)

Yeah, everyone is welcome to play at the club regardless of the how much or little paint is on your models.
All we ask is that the models are what they are supposed to be (i.e. don't put down a squad of Orcs and then say 'these are Assault Marines').
Other than that, a little painting progress on your models from week to week is more than enough.
You can even bring your paints along to the club and paint there if you want.
