Hi everone
I recently been told that Dettol seem to be ok as a paint stripper for both plastic & metal models. I'm going to try this out during the weekend with a old model to test it out. Just there a lot of old plastic models painted back in my youth, be nice to re-use them & do a lot better paint job.
If it work, I'll be happy mainly for plastic models. I current have a paint stripper for metal models but if use for Plastic it just turn them into a blob.
Dose anyone else know of any good paint stripper use for models??
As said I'm going to give Dettol a try out possible during the weekend & will post on the fourm on how it all gose.
Just I notice we not really had a topic on paint stripper for our models.

Dettol or Flash are both fine for plastic models mate. It's what I use.

I'd be keen to know how that goes myself - got some old models (not all painted by me) mostly gunked up in thick paint.

I have used Dettol, and it is the only stripper for plastic minis I have. I left mine in for 24 hours and then ran them under the tap. Most of the paint just sloughed off, and then I took a toothbrush to the rest. It won't work so well on properly applied primer, but that is not usually an issue.

Cool Going to give this a try on a old model during the weekend. Then if all gose well........ Just mean I can use a lot more bit like the old 3rd ed era Space Marine bare heads from badly painted Marines from back in the days. Then there will be no stopping me. Jamie

Hi Jamie, Never used Dettol let me know how it works out. I have used brake fluid and it does a great job of stripping paint on both Plastic and Metal, bonus is that it also breaks the glue bond on both too. After 24 hours in this stuff you have a bag of shiny new bits. Use a covered container though this stuff does smell a bit !!!!

Try dettol.
So far it seem to be taken of the undercaot of the test model. But it not come off as much as I though it would. I left it for 24 hour, so re-trying to see if it will take of the remain undercaot.
It a old model from back in 1999 where I undercaoted the model & the weather effected the spray. So though be best try it out on him.
So far seem to be ok, not sure if it down to just being a undercaot model vs a full painted model. Try a old model painted up as well see how that gose.

Did you put the model under a running warm water tap and scrub it with an old toothbrush?

That's exactly how I do it. Works fine. You don't always get every single trace of old paint gone and you may need to use a blade to get some of the paint out of detail, but you'd be surprised at how much paint actually comes of with a simple rinse.

When I try it. The paint has came off, but the models are brownish with bit of plastic show through the edge.
Also found Dettol was make them very stick dispit being wash, etc....
I use somthing else which has help clean a bit more, though still a bit brownish in colour.
Anything I done wrong? The models where wash under hot water, put in a sink to help clean them a bit. By the looks of it I could happily undercaot them with out effect, just when useing dettol it went a bit sticky & a dark brown. As said was wash under hot water while clean.

Ment to post about this a while back.
I use dettol by it self &... It took the paint off but turn the black undercaot in a grit brown & made the model very sticky. No matter how much I use the tooth brush to take off the paint.
Then try a oven cleaner. This seem to help take the stickiness of the dettol off & seem to be ok to paint the models.
While useing the oven cleanr it self, it dose not take the paint off as much, just wash & detail, it leave base coat. So if you where to re-paint it going to still be clog up the detail.
So over all I found it best useing Dettol to take the model back to it undercaoted state. Then use the oven cleaner to just take off the stickiness from the detail. Then it useible for re-painting.
I already done this to one of my Wolves a while back & painted well/no effect.
I might try flash out tomorrow afternoon see what that is like.

Use Tesco all purpose cleaner pine & this work so much better than the oven or dettol. Both those made models sticky & Dettol even when wash those models where a nightmare due to being sticky.
Tesco all purpose is great. I put the models in a tub 7pm yesterday & just clean them. Toothbrush to take the bulk of the paint off & then a toothpick to scrap the Black undercaot off. It will never be perfect with the undercaot but make it more paintible.
