Thoughts?
The models look nice, but £70 for a game that looks rather limited seems steep to me. Then again, some may prefer not having to buy an army on top of the box...

It certainly looks like it contains lovely models.
However, I've never been a massive fan of pirate themed games/models/films and would prefer a good space naval battle to a sea based one.
So I suppose £70 is a lot of money for a game which at the moment doesn't appeal to me all that much. Upon playing it, I may well change my mind, but the the chances are by the time I've had a chance to play it, they will all have been sold out.

Option two: Buy it, read the rules and if you don't like it sell it on ebay for at least what you paid for it (but hopefully more!). I have to say I am a sucker for undead pirates and the like... so I may have just ordered one for myself As I definitely have a thing for naval games at the moment, I think they must have been reading my mind as to how to get me to part with my cash. The models are lovely I just hope I can paint them half as well as the studio ones. £70 may seem a bit steep for 10 models but how many 40k or fantasy single models are around a £10, so its not as bad as it seems as your getting a complete game into the bargin. Where it does compare badly is to starter sets for core game systems and box sets like Space Hulk that have a much larger model count. Well I guess we judge for ourselves on the 1st of October. Cheers

Maybe worth buying a few sets as an investment (and perhaps hoping to get a game with someone else, to see whether it's worth opening or selling them)...

Yes but if your first thought is to keep it for yourself, assuming the rules are to your liking, your going to have to open it and the only way your ever going to own it is if you order it now... or buy it on ebay for an exorbitant price I can't abide people who buy things (especially limited editions etc) in multiples to sell them on-line, you have been warned lest you end up on my list

I pre-ordered it and I'm looking forward to it. There has been quite a lot of comment about the price but to be honest I don't think it's that out of kilter with comparable products. A coffin-box release from FFG such as Twilight Imperium or Descent is about £70. Their mid-size box games such as Arkham Horror or Gears of War are about £50. However, Squinty made a good point on saturday when I bumped into him when he pointed out that it's not just £70 for a game, it's £70 for a game we know nothing about. That does make the outlay more of a risk.
That being said, come the 1st October I bet I'm not the only one talking like a pirate....

I'm chuffed with the "uncreasable" mat it comes with. Means I can take it over to friends and get a game anywhere! The models are nice too.

£70 for 10 models it may be, but theres a LOT of other stuff in that box too..
From GW website:
This boxed game contains:
98-page Rulebook Seascape Gaming Mat 10 Warships 10 Scenic Bases 7 Cog Auxiliaries 1 Dragon Auxiliary 1 Dirigible Auxiliary 7 Islands 5 Shipwreck Pieces 3 Sea Monsters 5 Treasure Tokens 12 Dice 1 Wind Gauge 2 Ship's Wheels 1 Navigation Rod 10 Warship Cards 55 Damage Cards 40 Fate Cards 12 Auxiliary Cards 10 Wound Cards 11 Miscellaneous Cards
And, as Paul says - thats about the going rate for an all in one boxed game from the likes of FFG.

So having got my copy now and read the rules, I have to say the game looks like great fun! There are already loads of reviews on the net so I will just give you my 2 cents.
As far as the box set goes its certainly not lacking for stuff in the box, there are loads of parts for the ships and scenery. The models are very nicely detailed, some what similar to Dystopian Wars in terms of detail but a lot more going on due to the fantasy aspect. The rule book is very nicely laid out, though the landscape format reminds me of a kids book lol.
The only down sides are the game cards are very thin and will likely get damaged very quickly. Not being standard CCG size it will be difficult if not impossible to find sleeves to protect them. Also the gaming mat while very nice looking is printed on a very cheap and thin polyester material, which is a bit of a shame when comparing it to other fixed box game boards/mats quality.
I should have time to assemble it in time for Thursday if anyone fancies a game? Or anything else for that matter.
Cheers
