Thought it was a good day out, a little dissapointed with 26th but still had a couple of really good games and three great opponents. Here's a bit about how they went.
Game 1 I was drawn vs Antony Townsen with his High Elf army comprising of 14 White Lions, a lvl2 Mage, a Noble on Eagle, 2 bolt throwers and 10 archers. I started off by moving my entire army up onto the objective confident that I should be able to gain atleast those 400 points as Antony had set up on the board edge. I lost a fair bit of my pirate unit to shooting but by turn 3 still had Long Drong remaining. I used his two shots to shoot at the Noble on Eagle and scored a wound on each. Turn 4 saw my Doomseeker die to shooting and my trollslayer unit get taken down to 6 guys while the brotherhood unit was 5 models including my BSB and General however with their double unit strength banner I still felt reasonably confident of claiming the centre point. However turn 5 saw things take a turn for the worse as I rolled a double 1 to dispel a firey blast which managed to kill my entire brotherhood unit along with my bsb and general as some spectacular rolling from Antony was followed by me failing to make a single 5+ward save. Turn 5 also saw the only combat of the game as Long Drong stood and shoot another wound off the eagle before being despatched off by the noble. All in all a very short game that gave me the worst possible start for the tournament with me only getting 100 vp's to 1497 vp's.
Game 2 saw me on the second bottom table playing against Ken Watters Orc and Goblin army. Ken was feilding 4 large units of 1 each of Night Goblins, Black Orcs, Big uns and Orc Boyz along with 3 spear chukkas, a doom diver, 6 trolls and 2 units of 5 wolf riders. He had level 2 orc shaman, 2 blorc hero's one of which was a bsb and a blorc lord. This game saw my luck take a turn for the better with me generally rolling above average. Turn 1 I shot the goblin hewer and killed 6 big uns who had also lost 6 models to a failed animosity test. But by turn 2 we were already in combat and some terrible lucky by Ken saw his 17 Big Uns with Shaman and Hero as well as 30 Orc Boyz do not even a single wound to my Slayer Pirates before I replied with 9 wounds including having Long Drong kill the Shaman. This meant he failed both Leadership test and the Dwarfs ran both units down. Turn 2 also saw the Fanatics get drawn out but they only managed to wound a doomseeker and do little else through out the game. Turn 3 was the first time I'd got a doomseeker into combat all day and it held up well vs the black orcs but unfortunately blocked the charge of my lords brotherhood of grimnir. So I decided to take the risk of charging my character assasinating hero straight into the Black Orc Lord and managed to put 3 wounds on the lord killing it outright. From that point on it became a case of me mopping up the rest of the orcs as the pirates got a flank charge on the trolls and 2 doomseekers ran down the night goblins. All that was left by turn 6 was a doom diver which my great weapon unit (all that was left of it) managed to kill. The game was pretty much over by turn 3/4 (turn 4 saw the loss of the remaing black orc unit) but Ken kept playing on in true greenskin spirit trying to take down as many dwarves as he could. A massacre for me as I got 3050 vp's to the loss of 272 vp's.
By game 3 I was back up to table 12 and a big win could have saw me finish top 10 despite the terrible start. My opponent here was DWARF chairman Brian Forrester using his Empire army. Brain had a somewhat unusual Empire army centered around 2 large blocks of unbreakable flagellants as well as the mighty war altar. He also had 10 huntsmen, 5 knights, 2 cannons, 25 swordsmen with 10 free company and 10 archers, 2 level 2 mages, a mounted warrior priest, 10 crossbowmen and 2 units of 5 outriders. I was surprised a lack of steam tank but from what I could see throughout the game I think not having it only benefitted Brians army. I had a really strong start in this game with the goblin hewer sniping a lone mage who had the rod of power turn 1. Before Briains turn 3 I had already managed to kill the knight unit and seriously dent the swordsmen and Brians shooting phase had done little other than blow up a cannon. Turn 3 would prove to be the turning point however with my losing my slayer pirates except Long Drong to a unit of outriders and quite possibly the luckiest shooting ever saw 10 huntsmen shoot down all 3 members of the goblin hewer crew causing 4 wounds with 10 shots at 4's to hit, 5's to hit the crew and 5's to wound. The war altar also charged my brotherhood of grimnir and the specculum weilding Arch Lector issued a challenge killing my hero before he could strike back. I also lost a couple of doomseekers this turn to crossbow fire. I did manage in the next turn to take out the swordsmen and free company as well as make the archers flee but the flagellants put a dent in my unit of slayers with 2 hand weapons. Turn 5 saw my Lord get the second least glorious death possible in warhammer (second only to being shot by a gnoblars broken bottle) as he was kicked in the head by a horse, not long after the arch lector had killed my champion. However I did finally manage to kill off all of 1 flagellant unit but the champion took out my great weapon wielding hero. The other flagellant unit charged my other unit of troll slayers where again a champion killed my hero due to the ability to re-roll hits and wounds. By turn 6 I did mange to kill all the flagellants but all I had remaing was 1 doomseeker my wounded bsb and half a unit of brotherhood of grimnir. Briain however had managed to keep his outriders, cannon, mage and huntsmen out of trouble to not only deny me their points but claim 3 of the 4 table quarters. This ended up my second loss of the day with 1243 vp's vs 2333 vp's atleast it was only a solid loss and not a massacre.
Overall like I said I enjoyed the tournament and got to play three new opponents, I felt I was a bit unlucky in game 3 but that was perhaps making up for the excellent rolling in game 2.
Thanks to the guys at DWARF and to all three opponents, I should definitly be making a return trip to Dunfermline in 2009.
